Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is additional funding to schools to support and raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils.  It is based on the number of pupils who:

 -  are registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years

- are registered as a child of a parent serving in the UK’s Armed Forces in the past 5 years

-  are in Local Authority care for one day or more

-  has left Local Authority care because of one of the following reasons:

                                -  adoption

                                -  a special guardianship order

                                -  a child arrangements order

Terms on which PPG is allocated to schools:

The grant may be spent in the following ways:

  • for the purposes of the school, that is for the educational benefit of pupils registered at that school
  • for the benefit of pupils registered at other maintained schools or academies
  • on community facilities; for example, services whose provision furthers any charitable purpose for the benefit of pupils at the school or their families, or people who live or work in the locality in which the school is situated
  • Extra one-to-one or small-group support for children within the classroom.
  • Employing extra teaching assistants to work with classes.
  • Running catch-up sessions before or after school, for example for children who need extra help with maths or literacy.
  • Running a school breakfast club to improve attendance.
  • Providing extra tuition for able children.
  • Providing music lessons for children whose families would be unable to pay for them.
  • Funding educational trips and visits.
  • Paying for additional help such as speech and language therapy or family therapy.
  • Funding English classes for children who speak another language at home.
  • Investing in resources that boost children’s learning, such as laptops or tablets.

 However, Bevendean Primary School is best placed to identify what would be of most benefit to the children who are eligible.  This will change year on year to support

Online Reporting:

Schools maintained by the local authority must publish their strategy for using the pupil premium on their website.

Bevendean Primary School is committed to supporting all pupils, including disadvantaged children by diminishing the difference between the attainment of socially disadvantaged pupils and their peers and the Pupil Premium Grant funding is essential in the school achieving this.

How to Ensure that Bevendean Primary can Receive these Additional Funds:

Prior to April 2018, children qualified for free school meals – and accordingly pupil premium – if you received any of the following benefits:

  •  Income support
  •  Income-based jobseekers’ allowance
  •  Income-related employment and support allowance
  •  Support under Part IV of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  •  The guaranteed element of state pension credit
  •  Child tax credit, provided that you are not also entitled to working tax credit and have an annual gross income of £16,190 or less

These benefits have now been rolled into a single benefit, called Universal Credit. From April 2018, free school meals and pupil premium will only be allocated to pupils with a family income under £7,400 (net) per year.

Your child’s school will be able to tell you what you need to do to register your child as eligible.

Since September 2014, all children in Reception and Years 1 and 2 have qualified for free school meals, regardless of their family income, but only the children who would qualify for free meals under the above income-based criteria will receive the pupil premium.

If your child qualifies for free school meals, it’s important that you tell us  – even if you prefer your child to bring a packed lunch to school – as this enables us to claim Pupil Premium funding.

At Bevendean Primary School, the PPG is primarily used to support interventions.  These early interventions are essential in ensuring that we are able to support pupils and close the attainment gap and increase the percent of pupils achieving age-related expectations (ARE) and even to a greater depth (GDS) for Reading, Writing and Maths.

The school has prioritised early interventions to enable children starting school get off to a good start and those with lower than expected attainment are identified and supported early.
