Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Year 5 is an exciting and challenging year for the children. In the upper school they are expected to take a more mature and independent approach towards learning. These skills are developed throughout the year during a variety of tasks and lessons and provide the key foundations that prepare our children for the challenges of year 6. We look forward to seeing your children develop as they encounter a new year.

Our Current Topics

Autumn - The Tudors

Throughout this term, children will be able to experience the life of a Terrible Tudor. They will be introduced to one of the most famous royal families in British history. Children will explore the Tudor family tree and find out about life in Britain during the Tudor period, exploring everything from questionable medical practices to the difference between the lives of rich and poor children. We will finish this topic with a trip to Hever Castle (the childhood home of Anne Boleyn) and the children will complete a project making their very own Tudor houses.

Spring – Around the World

During this term, children will be exploring the world and the variety of cultures within it. In order for this to happen, they will be taught how to find continents, countries and major cities with an Atlas. We will also be looking into different music from around the world which children will identify and reflect on. Throughout the term, we will also be researching masks from different cultures. The children then have the opportunity to design and create their own mask made out of mod rock.

Summer – Brighton

Within this topic, children will be looking into Brighton’s past, present and future. This will be achieved through research of different landmarks within Brighton, such as; the Palace and West Pier, the Pavilion, the I360, the lanes and the Volks Railway. As part of the topic, children will have the chance to go on the I360, orienteer around the lanes and sketch the two piers on our school trip towards the end of May.
