Nursery aged children work within a discrete phase of education for children from birth to five, called the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It is based upon the belief that young children learn most effectively when they are actively involved in play and other first hand experiences. The early knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding children gain are of vital importance and influence future development and success. There are seven areas of learning:

Communication and Language - Children are provided with opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

Physical Development - Children have opportunities to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children are helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development - Children develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

Literacy - This involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading opportunities.  We use Talk for Writing throughout the school which provides children with opportunities to learn stories.

Mathematics - Children are provided with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition.

Understanding the World - This involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Expressive Arts and Design - Children are provided with opportunities to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

We operate a free flow basis, meaning the children can choose to play in the inside or outside learning environments. Outside each early years classroom we have a fixed canopy providing sheltered outdoor classrooms for use in most weather

Our Current Topics

Sometimes our topics or focus shift with the children interests, but here is a taste of what we have planned for the year.  We are also a Talk for Writing school, which means we learn a new story each half term.  This really helps the children learn how a story works and prepares them for writing their own stories as they progress through the school.

Home-School Links – Tapestry Online Learning Journal

We like to promote links between home and school as we feel it is important to share information about your child and what they do at school. Once your child has started school you will receive information about how to register and use an online learning journal called Tapestry. We encourage parents and carers to share information which you feel can contribute to our knowledge of your child and what they can do.
